Highlights

 

One of the largest Colleges of the University of Mumbai with enrollment of more than 11,000 students, out of which approximately 5000 are from the Sindhi linguistic minority Community and 1000 students from scheduled categories and other minority communities. The University of Mumbai ranked the College third in academic performance for the academic year 2005-06.

2)    Research

  •       Well established SIX RESEARCH LABORATORIES/ DEPARTMENTS recognized by the University of Mumbai with approved Research Centres for Ph.D., and Masters in the subjects of (1) Microbiology  (2) Botany  (3) Physics  (4) History  (5) Hindi and (6) Sindhi.  

  •       M.Phil. English, Marathi and Library Science affiliated to Yashwantrao Chawan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU)

  •       Faculty Exchange and Research Programmes with Clayton University, West Georgia, USA, CENNP- GUJCOST, Department of Physivs, Bhavnagar University and Kaivalyadhama, the Internationally renowned Yoga Institute.  

  •       The only Science College of the University of Mumbai with a CPCSEA- registered Animal House providing facilities for Animal Breeding and Experimentation. Well-developed Botanical Garden for Horticulture Experiments.  

  •       University Grants Commission (UGC) awarded Nine Minor Research Projects to the College under X Plan Period, 07 Teachers availed themselves of F.I.P. for pursuing Ph.D. under X Plan period.  

  •       The University of Mumbai awarded twelve Minor Research Projects to the college in last two academic years.  

  •       Clinical Research: An Emerging field in Education Initiated in the Academic Year 2006 - 2007

    i)   Seminar on Animal Experimentation in Pre Clinical Studies in coordination with Dr. L.H.H. College of Pharmacy and Prin. K.M.K. Pharmacy Polytechnic

    ii)  Seminar on Clinical Research Current Scenario  

  •      Community Research Projects conducted on the following:

  1. Maharashtra Pollution Control Board awarded Air Monitoring Programme Ulhasnagar and Badlapur under the National Air Monitoring Programme of the College. 

  2. Thane Municipal Corporation awarded the Lake Cleaning Project in Thane City to the College.

  3. NGO Jidnyasa awarded Project on Water Quality of Villages in Thane District.

  4. Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation-sponsored Annual Study Report on Civic Facilities In Ulhasnagar  

  •    Childline Project Report by the students of the College on Need Assessment Studies Report to Childline  India Foundation.  

Major Research Project sanctioned by the Department of Bio-Technology jointly to the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad and Smt. C.H.M. College on  Exploration of the Molecular Diversity and Insecticidal spectrum of the isolates of Bacillus thuringiensis of the Western Ghats of India and the NE Hill regions, establishment of Repository at University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad and cloning novel Insecticidal genes.

 Distance Education Centre: Y.C.M.O.U:  offering courses for M. Phil in Marathi, Library Science and English, M.B.A., B.Com. and B.As. This Centre is making efforts to reach out to such sections of Society who have opted out of Education mid-way and special attention is paid for Womens Enrolment. More than 1500 students are enrolled for these courses  

  Five Post-Graduate Advanced Diploma programmes of Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), Govt. of Maharashtra in Technical and Analytical Chemistry, Medical Laboratory Technology, Nutrition and Dietetics, Real Estate Management, and Hospitality Management.

  3)      Major Outreach Initiatives

a)            First College in India and only College in Maharashtra to be awarded Womens Studies Centre by the University Grants Commission.

b)           The First College in the University of Mumbai to be awarded the Gandhian Studies Centre by University Grants Commission.

c)           Pioneering efforts to create National Youth Network (NYN) with the support of University Grants Commission.

d)           Blood Donation Camps organised regularly, and every year more than 300 blood bottles are collected; 1010 blood bottles were collected in the year 2002 during the Blood Donation Camp organised in association with the Raj Bhawan, Maharashtra. The only College of the University of Mumbai with this distinction.

e)           Chandi Utsav Annual College Festival provides opportunities to small scale Women entrepreneurs to exhibit and market their products. The entire proceeds of Chandi Utsav are donated to Shantivan Ashram, a Home for Leprosy patients and the Aged. The College celebrates Diwali Festival at Shantivan since the last six years.

f)            Adult Education Programme for Women dropped out school level or illiterate at Ulhasnagar, Kalyan, Badlapur, Thane and Pune and Yoga Teaching Learning Programme for Municipal School teachers and Students in association with Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation and Kaivalyadhama.

g)           Inculcation of National and Moral Values: Bhajan Prabhat, Bhajan Sandhya at college and community places including the places like Maha Ganapati Temple, Titwala, University of Mumbai, Gateway of India etc. Regular visits and organization of Inter Collegiate Programs and competitions like Cycle Rally, Marathon, Walkathon, Quiz, Discussions, Conferences etc. on these aspects on the occasions of National Importance.

h)           UGCsponsored Remedial Coaching for students of Minority communities (Sindhi, Muslim, Boudh, Sikh, Christian and Parsee) for FYBA, TYBSc and TYBCom classes.

i)             Republic Day Cultural Programme: In association with S.D.O. Office, U.M.C. and D.C.Ps Office, Ulhasnagar on the eve of the Republic Day is organised on the Community Level, attended by the Students and Staff of various Schools of Ulhasnagar.

j)             Vigyan Utsav:  An Annual Science festival comprising of Inter Collegiate competitions Avishkar, Aavesh and Srujan

4)      Sports

  1.       5th position in Sports ranking of University of Mumbai in 2005-2006; consistently for the 6th year the College achieved the distinction of being in first 10 of Sports rankings in the University of Mumbai.  Well- developed Sports grounds of high standard, which are consistently used for organizing Inter-Collegiate Tournaments in Football, Ball Badminton, Handball and Athletics and Inter-University Tournaments in Ball Badminton.  

  2.       In last 6 years more than 150 students are selected for Inter University and national Sports events. In the academic year 2005-2006: 17 Students were selected to represent University of Mumbai in the Inter-University Tournaments, 17 students were selected to represent State of Maharashtra for National Sports events and 02 students were selected to represent India for International Sports  

  3.      The Strongest Woman Title was conferred at the University and Inter University levels to the student of this College consecutively for the second year.

5)      Cultural

  1.     Well-Developed facilities and environment for promotion of Cultural activities. The College has its own    orchestra  for the past 6 years. The College conducted Inter-Collegiate Youth Festival of the University of Mumbai for Thane District twice in the last 06 years.  

  2.       The College students were short-listed in 11 out of 27 events at Zonal level and College won 01 gold medal and 01 bronze medal at the 39th University Youth Festival. 01 student was selected as a member of prestigious Cultural Contingent of University of Mumbai, which won 1st place in Indra Dhanush the Inter University Youth Festival.

  3.      The College has instituted Gaurav Puraskar and Yugantar Gaurav Puraskar since 2001. This Puraskar has been conferred since then on Padma Shri Ravindra Jain (2001), Padma Bhushan Ustad Zakir Hussain (2002), Padma Shri Begum Parween Sultana and Ustad Dilshad Khan (2003), Padma Bhushan Gulzar (2004), Padma Bhushan Jagjit Singh (2005) and Shri Rajesh Khanna and Shri Suresh Wadkar (2006).

6)     N.C.C. Unit (Boys & Girls)

      In last 6 years 10 N.C.C. cadets have been selected for Republic Day Parade and in the year 2000-2001 the Prestigious Prime Minister Baton was awarded to the N.C.C. Cadet of Smt. C.H.M. College.

7)     National Service Scheme

     One of the largest NSS unit of the University Of Mumbai with enrollment of more than 300 volunteers taking major initiatives in organizing the social and community based programmes in the City of Ulhasnagar and Districts of Mumbai and Thane. The students are selected to represent University of Mumbai in National Integrartion camps and Other States and National Level Programmes.
